Applying for a license

  • There is a $100.00 application fee which must be paid online before an application can be emailed.
  • Other materials needed are:
    • Official transcript of pre-chiropractic hours from the college,
    • Official transcript of chiropractic college hours from the college,
    • Certified copy of chiropractic college diploma,
    • Completed application,
    • Payment of $200.00 examination fee (money order or cashier’s check),
    • Official copy of National Board scores from National Board of Chiropractic Examiners.
  • Pass a jurisprudence examination in the state on the state chiropractic law and rules and regulations of the Mississippi Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Once you have submitted your application license and paid your examination fee the Mississippi Board of Chiropractic Examiners will contact you to schedule your jurisprudence exam.

§ 73-6-1. Chiropractic practice
Effective: July 1, 2021

 (1) The practice of chiropractic involves the analysis of any interference with normal nerve transmission and expression, and the procedure preparatory to and complementary to the correction thereof, by adjustment and/or manipulation of the articulations of the vertebral column and for the restoration and maintenance of health without the use of drugs or surgery.

 (2) The chiropractic adjustment and/or manipulation of the articulations of the human body may include manual adjustments and/or manipulations and adjustments and/or manipulations by means of electrical and/or mechanical manual devices. Chiropractors licensed under this chapter may also use in conjunction with adjustments and/or manipulations of the spinal

structures electrical therapeutic modalities which induce heat or electrical current beneath the skin, including therapeutic ultrasound, galvanism, diathermy and electromuscular stimulation and other procedures taught by a chiropractic college approved by the Council on Chiropractic Education, its successor or an equivalent accrediting agency.

 (3) Chiropractors licensed under this chapter may utilize those electric therapeutic modalities described in subsection (2) of this section only after the chiropractor has completed a course of study containing a minimum of one hundred twenty (120) hours of instruction in the proper utilization of those procedures in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Council on
Chiropractic Education, its successor or an equivalent accrediting agency, and is qualified and so certified in that proper utilization.

(4) Chiropractors shall not prescribe or administer medicine to patients, perform surgery, practice obstetrics or osteopathy. Chiropractors shall be authorized to recommend, dispense or sell vitamins or food supplements.

 (5) Chiropractors shall not use venipuncture, capillary puncture, acupuncture or any other technique which is invasive of the human body either by penetrating the skin or through any of the orifices of the body or through the use of colonics.

 (6) A person professing to practice chiropractic for compensation must bring to the exercise of that person’s profession a reasonable degree of care and skill. Any injury resulting from a want of such care and skill shall be a tort for which a recovery may be had. If a chiropractor performs upon a patient any act authorized to be performed under this chapter but which act also constitutes a standard procedure of the practice of medicine including, but not limited to, the use of modalities such as those described in subsection (2) of this section and x-rays, under similar circumstances, the chiropractor shall be held to the same standard of care as would licensed doctors of medicine who are qualified to and who actually perform those acts under similar conditions and like circumstances.

 (7) Chiropractors licensed under this chapter are authorized to refer patients to licensed physical therapists for treatment.

 (8) Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine may respond on a referral basis and under the direct and immediate supervision of a Mississippi licensed veterinarian to calls for animals requiring their professional services provided the chiropractor has a current license from the State Board of Chiropractic Examiners and the chiropractor has completed a Mississippi Board of Veterinary Medicine approved animal chiropractic course.

 

Continuing Education

Deadline for renewal is June 30 of each year.

Each employee should have a renewal fee paid online. The fees are as follows:

Doctor: $200.00/each
CA: $50.00/each
RT: $50.00/each, every two years
Claims Reviewer: $25.00

Delinquent Fee for renewals after June 30 is $300.00 for the doctor, $100.00 for the CA, and $100.00 for the RT.

Continuing education hours for each person should be submitted to the Board of Chiropractic Examiners online. Hours needed are as follows:

Doctor: 12 hours, with 3 of these 12 in risk management annually
CA: 6 hours annually
RT: 12 hours biennially
Claims Reviewer: 10 hours annually

Note: The difference between an LLC and a PLLC is that all members of PLLC are required to be designated professionals.

What is an Associate?

An associate receives pay from the office by which they are employed. If you are an associate who will be dealing with vendors for selling goods, you should consider getting an EIN.

What is an independent Contractor?

An independent contractor receives pay from their patients and insurance companies directly. If you are an independent contractor, you need an EIN.

What To Consider When Selecting A Plan

Claims Made

A policy providing coverage that is triggered when a claim is made against the insured during the policy period, regardless of when the wrongful act that gave rise to the claim took place. (The one exception is when a retroactive date is applicable to a claims-made policy.)

Occurrence

An occurrence policy covers claims resulting from an injury or another event that occurs during the policy term. Coverage depends on the timing of the event. A claims-made policy covers claims that are made during the policy period.

Tail Coverage

An addition to a claims-made policy. It extends coverage for incidents that happened during the time you had your policy, but a claim was not filed until after your policy expired or was canceled. Tail coverage is another name for an extended reporting period.

Note: $1 Million/$3 Million is the minimum plan required in order to participate with some Insurance Companies.

Chiropractic services are reimbursed from the same a Mississippi Medicaid statewide uniform fee schedule based on seventy percent (70%) percent of Medicare in effect as of January 1, 2020. as authorized by the Legislature.

To enroll as a Mississippi Medicaid provider:

Submit your application with the appropriate taxonomy through the MESA portal located at https://medicaid.ms.gov/mesa-portal-for-providers/. All additional documentation should be uploaded in the Attachments section of the application.

You can also check your provider enrollment status on the portal by entering your Application Tracking Number (ATN) and SSN or Tax ID (depending on enrollment type).
