Louisiana Chiropractic Summary

The Louisiana State Board of Chiropractic Examiners was created within the Department of Health and Hospitals by Legislative Act in 1974, for the purpose of licensing and regulating chiropractic practice to ensure the highest levels of professional excellence for the benefit and protection of the citizens of the State of Louisiana.

A chiropractor may diagnose conditions associated with the functional integrity of the spine and treating by adjustment, manipulation, and the use of the physical and other properties of heat, light, water, electricity, sound massage, therapeutic exercise, mobilization, mechanical devices, and other physical rehabilitation measures for the purpose of correcting interference with normal nerve transmission and expression

Post-Licensing Education

Continuing Education requirements

15 hours required every year. 2 hours of documentation and 1 hour of ethics is required. No hours are allowed online.

The Board member assigned to review continuing education seminars may only accept those courses which are sponsored by a state chiropractic association or a college or university whose Doctor of Chiropractic degree program is accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) and builds upon the basic courses required for the practice of chiropractic, which may include up to 3 hours of chiropractic philosophy but shall exclude practice building/management. Qualifications:

1. A chiropractor can perform a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam if they are a certified medical examiner (CME) listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) National Registry.

2. Achievement of a Diplomate in Oriental Medicine from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) or its equivalent as recognized by the Council and approved by the Board, or an organization that is recognized as equivalent to the NCCAOM by the Council and approved by the Board.

3. Requires 50 hours of classroom training.

4. The practice of chiropractic does not include the right to prescribe, dispense, or administer medicine or drugs, or to engage in the practice of major or minor surgery, obstetrics, X-ray therapy, radium therapy, or nuclear medicine. Link: https://www.legis.la.gov/legis/Law.aspx?p=y&d=93782
