Maryland Chiropractic Summary
The primary function of the Maryland State Board of Chiropractic Examiners is to protect the healthcare public. This is accomplished by ensuring that chiropractors and chiropractic assistants are properly licensed, trained, and educated. In addition, it is the duty of the Board to ensure that licensees and registrants comply with laws and regulations pertaining to their respective scope of practice.
A drugless system of health care based on the principle that interference with the transmission of nerve impulses may cause disease. The Practice of Chiropractic includes the diagnosing and locating of misaligned or displaced vertebrae and, through manual manipulation and adjustment of the spine and other skeletal structures, treating disorders of the human body.

All non- pre-approved providers (e.g., Commercial providers, not using Pre-Approved Provider courses) must submit their courses for approval with a $25.00 review fee (per mailing). Non-preapproved provider courses will to be posted on the Board’s website. Approvals expire five (5) years from the date the Board approved the course. Submission of courses for review must be postmarked at least sixty (60) days prior to the start of the date of the course.

Qualifications:
1. Must be pre-approved by the Maryland Board of Chiropractic Examiners. The pre-approval process requires the chiropractor to complete a program from an approved provider that takes about 30–40 hours. The chiropractor must also demonstrate knowledge, training, and education in all aspects of MUA, including equipment and contraindications.
2. The school or institution may decide whether to accept their signature. It’s best to check with the institution before performing the exam.

4. A chiropractor can perform a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam if they are a certified medical examiner (CME) listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) National Registry.
5. Must hold a separate Maryland Acupuncture license.
6. Must be registered with the Maryland Board of Chiropractic Examiners and meet certain requirements.
7. The practice of chiropractic does not include the use of drugs or surgery, or the practice of osteopathy, obstetrics, or any other branch of medicine.
